A Very, Very Short Post That Isn’t Really A Post

I’m not doing a post today. I’m reading a book — for the first time in fuck knows how long I can concentrate on reading something longer than a blog post because this morning Kumblant brought me some squishy workman’s earplugs that block out all outside noises and leave me with just the noises in my head to listen to – oh, and my heart beat has moved up to my brain, bdum, bdum, bdum, so at least I know I’m not dead.

The book’s called ‘The Wilding’ and it’s by Maria McCann and it was longlisted for the Orange Prize and it was the top book on one of the stacks in my collection of books to read because I stack them as I get them so the most recent acquisition goes on top. Up to now it’s fair to middling and I haven’t thrown it out of the window in disgust although in my opinion the MC sounds just the slightest bit too girly for a 26 year old man (I thought he WAS a girl in the first few sentences of the book) although he isn’t girly, but he isn’t exactly a stud either. Normally something like that would bother me enough for me not to continue (so many books, so little time) but it’s not a heavy read by any stretch so I’m just enjoying it for what it is (good story, nice suspense build up, gentle humour etc etc).

So, sorry and all that, but no post today – unless I get sick of the tinnitus and being reminded I’m alive by the bdum.

    Dear Dotty,
Glad to hear you’re reading a book. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it. I’m reading one too but it will take me awhile to finish. Love those earplugs…saved me more than once!!

    • Dear Dorothy,

They’re good aren’t they? I don’t like the feel of them though, they’re like dense marshmallows.

      • Dear Dorothy,

I’m going to experiment – I’ll focus on the book for a while and then take them out to see if I can STILL focus – I don’t think I’ll be able to wear them for ages, but if they work for a while it’s better than not.

  2. Dear Dotty,

If you listen very hard, (said Led Zeppelin,) you can hear your heart and your voices doing a samba in your left ear. I sure have fun with mine!

    Enjoy your read!

  4. I have tinnitus only in my left ear. It seems to go away if I eat a lot of fruit. The next morning it’s gone. But tends to come back a bit in the evenng when I’m tired. It’s not really loud yet but I’m not looking forward to it getting worse. And it’s late Autumn here so fruit is much more expensive and will become more so in Winter. Which reminds me, it’s almost 3:40 am and I should be in bed. So, goodnight.

    • Dear Lady Dennis,

Tinnitus is allergic to fruit – I wonder if it’s allergic to Cumberland sausages. I’ll have to eat more to experiment.

Sorry you have tinnitus too, it’s a bastard. Hopefully yours might not get worse.

      Have a good sleep. 🙂

  6. Dear Dotty,

I recommend noise-reducing headphones. They can be expensive but they are SO. WORTH. IT.

Also, I was once on a drug that made me able to hear my eyes move. The doctors never believed me though. The headphones didn’t help with that.

    • Dear Kathy,

I WANT TO HEAR MY EYES MOVE TOO!!

I’ve tried headphones but I get claustrophobic in them, I’ve never liked them.

      • Dear Dotty,

Hearing your eyes move is fun, until you realize that you can’t turn it off. Then it’s really annoying. Do you have any idea how much you move your eyes, even when they’re shut and you’re trying not to? A whole lot, that’s how much. I thank the pharmaceutical gods that it stopped once I stopped that medication.
        Love,
        Kathy

      • Dear Kathy,

Ah. Maybe I’ll leave it then, I have enough noises going on that won’t ever turn off – learn to live with it they say. HAH!

  8. Dear Dotty,

I adore those earplugs and freak out if I do not have a pair available. I hope you find the experience rewarding, even with the bdum.

PS: I always keep a pair stashed in a cup of pens atop a brick near my study chair.

I’m not dead either, I do wish however that I too could curl up with my book, the book on top of the pile. It’s one of those days when my head needs a good shooshing. But the outside world beckons… i hope your tinnitus buggers off 🙂

  10. Good morning Dotty,
You may like The psychopath test, when you’ve finished the book about the girly bloke. Or it may just look cool on top of your pile 🙂
